After years of studying the land in western North Dakota, oil was finally “hit” in the 1950s on a wheat farm near Dickinson. Up until that time, geologists in North Dakota were certain there was oil available for drilling. Ron Ness explains that 360 million years ago, North Dakota was a shallow sea bed, with temperatures like those similar to present day Costa Rico. Over a period of millions of years, Mr. Ness says that the results of natural evolution has provided today’s present day oil boom in the state, also known as the Bakken.  […]

Your father was instrumental in the success of Amerada in the discovery of oil. He worked tirelessly as companies drilled throughout he state, ensuring the passage of important legislation, communicating with drilling companies, and supporting the early industry in anyway he could. He did a tremendous job.

He was there at the time of the development and many years after. He told us that there was more oil there but we couldn’t get to it with then current technology. He died too soon to see what has become of oil in ND. I have been told that many of the oil companies use the cores in the Core and Sample Library at UND.

Well done, Clarence!
